Abstract

The joy of mathematics – A phrase that has been used in the National Curriculum Framework – has to be handled mindfully and explored in depth. What is the joy of mathematics? Is it just about fun classrooms and frivolous mathematics? Can we find joy in the rigour of mathematics? Isn’t that an oxymoron? While At Right Angles cannot prescribe a dose of joy, we certainly can showcase ways in which to infuse students with the sheer exhilaration of seeing mathematics everywhere, of seeing patterns in shapes and numbers, of making connections and testing generalisations, of constructing sensible arguments, of validating their stance. Let’s release our inner child with confident and fearless minds.
