Teaching is a purposive activity aimed at the well-being of the young ones. Teachers have an important role to play in the child’s epistemic, emotional, intellectual and moral pathways of ongoing development. In recent times, globally, this complex work of teachers has been subjected to intense scrutiny by the aggressive agendas of the State that suspect their capability and willingness to care for the young. In the context of India, there is a growing suspicion that teachers in public schools are not taking enough responsibility for children. There is, however, a concomitant call for the professionalization of teaching. Belittling and devaluating teachers’ work must be resisted. The ideas of ‘communication’, ‘cooperation’ and ‘community’ outlined by John Dewey in Democracy and Education provide a response to the malaise of the managerial approach to educational work. His ideas, applied to the context of teachers’ work and their continued education, may help in the emergence of a professional collective that takes greater charge of their work and renew the ethical vision of education. If teachers in India desire an overall improvement of their profession, then it is imperative for them to come together as a professional community and make their voices heard.
