Abstract
The Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department (RDPR) has upgraded 5600 grampanchayat libraries and provided computers and internet connectivity in 4000 of these. Over three million children between the age group of 6-18 years have enrolled in these libraries that are free of charge. This revival of these public libraries includes adding carefully selected children’s books, training librarians, orienting teachers in the neighbouring schools, and outreach efforts to enrol children. Programs, such as ‘Oduva Belaku’ and ‘Pustaka Jolige’, see children reading books to their elders anda door-to-door collection of books.
