Abstract
The first step should be through usage of a concrete model, followed by a pictorial representation and lastly the introduction of the abstract symbol. Experience, understanding and verbalization are the sequence to be followed. Children need to understand that decimal numbers are part of the number system. Fractions and decimal numbers are not internalized by children in the same way as natural numbers (to which they are exposed from childhood).
