Abstract

The number π is ubiquitous in mathematics and in diverse fields of knowledge from ancient times. It is known that π is not a rational number. Also, it is known that it cannot be expressed in a compact form using simple arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or by taking roots. In other words, π is not an algebraic number. (A real number is an algebraic number if it is a zero of a polynomial with integer coefficients.)
