Abstract

The agriculture sector, which engages 55 per cent of the rural workforce1, assumes a major role in improving the overall welfare of rural society. As per the Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSS-SAS), crop cultivation contributes to nearly half of the farmers’ income. The economic sustainability of the crop production is essential to sustain interests of the farming community. It is imperative to understand the variation is agricultural production due to dynamic fluctuations in input prices, which inevitably translates to cost of cultivation.
