Abstract

News and images of the flooded Imphal city and the valley made its rounds on social media as cyclone Remal made its way through the north-eastern states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Assam in the last week of May, it was heart wrenching to see areas where I had walked just a few months ago under water. Kangla, the royal seat of the erstwhile kingdom of Manipur, the Governor's bungalow, Paona bazar, the Ima Keithel, worlds' only women run market, and many neighbourhoods of the city, and the valley were completely flooded. Even the hill towns of Ukhrul, Senapti and Wino in Manipur were severely affected due to floods, landslides and washed away bridges isolated towns and villages affecting the movement of essential services.
