Abstract

Memorization is often the primary skill exercised when learning algebraic identities. Small wonder that students tend to forget them well before their use-by date! Here, the sum of cubes identity is unpacked using a series of pictures more powerful than symbols. It doesn’t stop there — the article then investigates other sets of numbers for which ‘the sum of the cubes is equal to the square of the sum’.
