Abstract

This chapter seeks to study the various forms of writing about violence that circulate within and amongst intimate relationships in lesbian and queer lives. While violence against queer and gender nonconforming people within the institutional matrices of heterosexual family structures and by the state are well-documented, there are very few narratives that address the complexities and range of this violence as it plays out within queer affective geographies. We propose to study some of the paradoxes in the framing of violence within the context of queer romantic intimacies, which are often formed in relation to other systems of violence, one of which is the pathologising of alternative sexuality and gender variance by heteronormative and psycho-medical systems of recognition. This chapter begins with Moon Charania's Archive of Tongues (2023) to illustrate how it is impossible to write about queer desires in South Asia without considering the violence mediated through class, caste, religion, and legacies of colonialism. We look into the archival projects of CALERI and Sappho for Equality and anthologies such as Ashwini Sukthankar's Facing the Mirror: Lesbian Writing in India (1999) and Minakshi Sanyal (Malobika) and Sumita Beeti's Monologues: Lesbian Narratives of Bangladesh and West Bengal (2021) to theorise what is unsaid in specific modes of storytelling. In doing so, we underline the possibilities and limitations of literary forms and organisational reports in archiving intimate partner violence.
