Abstract

This article examines disputes over alleged encroachment on Gairan (common pasture) land in Maharashtra, focusing on residents of Pimpri Budruk and other villages in Pune district. It highlights discrepancies between official land records and villagers’ accounts of long-standing residence, inadequate demarcation and insufficient residential land. The article documents protests against demolition notices and demands for the regularisation of houses, raising wider issues of land rights, common resources, displacement and rural governance.
