Abstract

This unit examines natural calamities in the environmental history of the Indian subcontinent, exploring floods, fires, earthquakes, cyclones, epidemics, droughts and famines across different historical periods. It analyses how disasters are shaped not only by natural events but also by social, economic, political and environmental conditions, with particular attention to inequality, state responses and institutional structures. The unit traces experiences of calamities from ancient and medieval India through the colonial and modern periods, highlighting their transformative effects on societies and the development of disaster preparedness and adaptation.
