Abstract
This chapter provides a critical overview of internal displacement caused by modern industrial society’s goals of material well-being and economic development. It examines ethical and political dilemmas and trade-offs involved in intentionally displacing communities for building infrastructure, planning cities, extracting minerals, and setting aside land for biodiversity conservation. It highlights the adverse impacts of development-induced displacement and resettlement (DIDR), and the response from local communities, governments, political actors, and multilateral funding institutions. The key debate is whether DIDR is a core ingredient of the contemporary imagination of development or an avoidable side effect that can be mitigated adequately. Can we imagine development without displacement and its attendant ill effects on already-vulnerable people and communities? Using examples and case studies from the Global South, the chapter contextualizes DIDR and its alternatives in a world confronted by multiple and interlocking planetary crises.
