Abstract

The article analyses Myanmar’s 2026 general election, arguing that the electoral process cannot be considered democratic or legitimate amid military rule, criminalisation of dissent and the exclusion of meaningful political alternatives. It examines the decisive victory of the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and highlights how controlled elections and restricted political participation undermine democratic representation in Myanmar.
