Abstract

This chapter examines how the search for an invariable scale to measure commodity values or national income became intertwined with debates on the ultimate cause of value in classical economics. It contrasts Adam Smith’s concern with measuring real changes in national income with David Ricardo’s emphasis on labour as the determinant of value. It further discusses Sraffa’s reinterpretation, which dissociates classical economics from the notion of an ultimate cause of value through the concept of an ‘average commodity’, demonstrating how value and distribution can be analyzed independently.
