Abstract

Migrant workers have played an important but often invisible role in India’s economic development. Since liberalization in the late 1980s, agrarian displacement and urban migration have intensified. Focusing on Bangalore, the chapter argues that migrant workers are central to capital accumulation and economic growth, yet remain structurally marginalized. It highlights their persistent precarity and vulnerability, which are insufficiently addressed by either state or market mechanisms.
