Abstract

The food consumption pattern of refugee communities has been studied by many scholars, but few have acknowledged food continuity and its implications for the health of refugees in the host country. The present study highlights food continuity among Tibetan refugees in the Bylakuppe settlement, India. Data from 200 households were collected using a structured household questionnaire to understand food consumption patterns. Simultaneously, qualitative data were collected from 23 individuals, consisting of first-generation migrants (15) and second-generation individuals (8). Households derive energy mainly from carbohydrates and animal fats, and there is a prevalence of food insecurity among the Tibetan community. It is well established that food insecurity can have serious health consequences for emotional and mental well-being, highlighting the need for further study of food insecurity among Tibetan refugees worldwide.
