Abstract
"Go!" said he sternly then. "We will call it a stand-off, a Mexican stand-off, you lose your money, but you save your life," F Harvey Smith wrote in Sunday Mercury in 1876. In a Mexican standoff, parties are mutually locked in a situation no one wants, and none can withdraw unilaterally. There is no clear winner, and aggression triggers further aggression. The two coalitions in the electoral fray in Maharashtra are locked in the same situation. The Maha Vikas Aghadi yesterday promised to pay women in the state Rs 3,000 per month if they come to power.
