Abstract
The social sciences are often seen as easy, probably because they deal with issues and processes that surround us all the time, and on which we have ideas and positions. They are about people—our wealth, our problems and our values. Yet, this apparent simplicity is deceptive. Teaching the complexities of human beings is not easy. The recently developed social science textbooks of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) are perhaps the most ambitious effort of its kind in India. They seek to address the challenges faced by social science education in India.
