Abstract
The contributions made by Richard Cantillon to economic theory are now well known. In particular, his analyses of the social surplus, theory of value, and monetary issues have been considered noteworthy. This paper first presents a summary of Cantillon’s overall theoretical system by focusing on the theory of value and functional income distribution. Following this brief account, we examine the role played by consumption in the determination of activity levels in Cantillon’s economics. It is concluded that autonomous consumption by landowners plays a decisive role in determining activity levels and employment, subject to land constraints.
