The South Asian educational landscape is characterised by the coexistence of diverse music education trajectories in the general educational curriculum of schools. Music and other performing arts, as indigenous epistemic traditions and as civilisational accomplishments, account for the distinctive sociocultural ethos of these societies. Despite this emphasis, in the context of India, formal compulsory music education is not available, especially in the public schools where the majority of the children from socially and economically difficult backgrounds participate. Music is a spontaneous human activity of children that allows them to explore meaning-making, acquire aesthetic sensibilities, and express their feelings and identities. Two recent educational documents in India – the National Educational Policy (NEP) (2020) and the National Curriculum Framework of School Education (NCF-SE, 2023) – have made proposals to make art education (with music as an integral component) accessible to all children in India across the stages of education. The chapter will begin by outlining the status and challenges of music education in schools in India. The subsequent section will critically analyse the chapter on art education in the NCF-SE (2023). The final section of the chapter will offer directions for collective action among the actors associated with the lives of children and the need to listen to all children's musical voices in ways that pave the way for a peaceful and inclusive society.
