Abstract

In this chapter, the author unpacks the two schemes of pathshala education and the grant-in-aid Vernacular School system, focusing on how globally indexed education policies were adapted to local pressures, specificities, and histories. It examines how guru training schools preserved elements of traditional curriculum and pedagogy, demonstrating that the implementation of modern education policy is deeply shaped by local trajectories. The chapter also highlights the importance of scale in historical analysis, noting that global time scales often overlook such localized dynamics except as broad parallels.
