Abstract

Radhika Jain, artistic director of First Drop Theatre, a Bengaluru, India-based applied theatre company, has worked with organizations of varying sizes and nature to explore interventions toward better diversity and inclusion, and specifically, gender equity. First Drop uses tools such as Playback Theatre (PT), Forum Theatre, and role-play to examine power structures in the workplace and implicit biases that enable misconduct and inequity. Participant and management feedback revealed that these experiential methods helped people go beyond cognitive awareness to unearth deeper insights and increased empathy. Jain discusses how to use applied theatre tools to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion while also looking at the challenges faced in the process, including acknowledging the company's own biases and shortcomings.
