Abstract

Cancer is the deadliest disease of the twentieth century and the reason for millions of deaths all around the world each year. The uncontrolled proliferation of cells mainly characterizes the disease. Several cancer-related factors include genetic mutations in somatic or germline cells, changes in transcriptional gene expression, and posttranslational modifications (Hayes et al., 2012). There are more than 200 types of cancers with limited treatment options. One of the main reasons for high cancer deaths is due to the limited screening options at the early stages of cancer. Because of this, there is a large focus on cancer-associated biomarkers that can be useful in screening and treatment. Cancer biomarkers are the biomolecules produced by the cancer or the host’s response against cancer during tumorigenesis and progression of the disease. It is a way of differentiation between healthy and diseased patients and acts as indicators of pathological conditions; they can also act as a pharmacological response to drug treatment. Biomarkers can be DNAs, RNAs, transcription factors, cell surface receptors, metabolites, or secreted proteins produced by the tumors or the host in response to cancer (Silva et al., 2023). With the development of technologies, methods for biomarkers hunting have changed, including genomics and transcriptomics studies. Genomics checks for molecular mutations in a gene or panel of genes.
