Abstract
Until 2006, we thought of Pluto as the ninth planet in the solar system. Many of us learnt this ‘fact’ from our school textbooks. But our students learn that the solar system has only eight planets. Why did scientists believe Pluto was a planet for so long? Was this belief supported by evidence? What can our students learn from this episode in the history of science?
