Abstract
The importance of English is now widely recognized, not only in India but also across the globe. Although languages such as Chinese, Hindi and Swahili are spoken
by a much larger number of people, it seems that entry into the world of higher knowledge and social mobility is possible only with English. It has therefore become imperative to know the language. However, it is equally
clear that English cannot flourish at the cost of other languages; linguistic and cultural diversity is as important to humans as biodiversity.
We must therefore think of
teaching English in a multilingual context.
