Abstract
A disproportionately large fraction of the faculty and students of
many academic institutions have passed through the Calcutta
University. While the whole university system faces difficulties
from many directions, Indian science still looks east for much of
its talent, a fair (or unfair?) proportion shaped by CU. This issue
celebrates one of the architects of this great university – Asutosh
Mukherjee (or Mukhopadhyay, if you prefer). While the name is
well-known, Satyabachi Sar’s account of his personality, multiple
talents, firm principles, and outstanding achievements will be a
revelation
