Abstract
A disproportionately large fraction of the faculty and students of many academic institutions have passed through the Calcutta University. While the whole university system faces difficulties from many directions, Indian science still looks east for much of its talent, a fair (or unfair?) proportion shaped by CU. This issue celebrates one of the architects of this great university – Asutosh Mukherjee (or Mukhopadhyay, if you prefer). While the name is well-known, Satyabachi Sar’s account of his personality, multiple talents, firm principles, and outstanding achievements will be a revelation
