Abstract
While helping learners of English as a second language, the teacher is often confronted with the task of increasing their vocabulary. Which words to focus on is often determined by the lexicon used in the prescribed textbooks. However, ideally, it should be decided on the basis of two factors: (I) What are the needs of the learner? (ii) Which words are needed to carry on everyday conversation in colloquial English? A book on corpus-based analysis of English could help us in getting ready for the task.
