Abstract

The costs and benefits of restoration could be unequally distributed. The case of Adivasis (indigenous people) in terms of forest conservation is discussed in the chapter which has dealt with India. The need for local people to bear a higher burden to prevent the burning of peatlands is noted in the case of Indonesia. These distribution patterns can lead to political economy challenges for land restoration projects. These may require the design of appropriate compensation strategies on the part of governments and international organisations.
