Abstract

There are a number of initiatives to reduce or avoid land degradation. These include Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), and Bonn Challenge which are at the global level. There are regional initiates too. For example, the one in Africa aims at restoring 100 million hectares by 2030. The Middle-East Green Initiative has a goal of restoring 240 million hectares. There are similar initiatives in Latin America, Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia. The G20 Global Initiative on Land has the goal of reducing degraded land by 50% by 2040. However these initiatives to reduce or mitigate land degradation face different challenges. First is the lack of adequate financial resources for ecosystem restoration compared to those activities which may have a negative impact on nature. There can be contradictions between public policies and private practices leading to a higher level of degradation. The policies and actions to protect ecosystems (including land) are yet to be linked adequately to other development goals.
