Abstract

Ricardo's economic ideas have travelled widely and in different forms via Marx, Marshall, Keynes, and Sraffa. The reception literature of Ricardo has mostly been focused on Europe with the notable exception of Japan. Ricardo's ideas found their way to India through colonial administrators and via academic scholarship. As an example of the latter, Sraffa recorded the publication of a Bengali translation of Ricardo's Principles of Political Economy in Arthic Unnati in 1928–1930. While several Indian economists engaged with the work of Ricardo, two of the notable ones who placed his work in the distinct tradition of classical political economy are Krishna Bharadwaj (1935–1992) and Kanta Ranadive (1925/6–1996). In this chapter, I focus on Ranadive's assessment of Ricardo found in Ranadive, and thereby contribute to an overlooked chapter in the Indian reception of Ricardo.
