Abstract

This commentary examines the declining institutional autonomy of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and its implications for the production and interpretation of India’s history. It traces the ASI’s bureaucratic evolution and argues that increasing political influence has compromised its commitment to independent and scientific archaeological research. The article further examines the role of the ASI in place of worship disputes and raises concerns about the judiciary’s reliance on archaeological findings that may reflect a revisionist historical agenda.
