Abstract

This opinion article examines the growing credibility crisis of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), focusing on concerns over its institutional autonomy, bureaucratic interference and political pressures. Using the controversy surrounding the transfer of archaeologist K. Amarnath Ramakrishna and the Keeladi excavations as a case, it argues that archaeological research risks being influenced by nationalist narratives, undermining the independence and scholarly integrity of India’s archaeological institutions.
