Abstract

This article examines caste in India as not only a socio-economic hierarchy but also an epistemic order that regulates access to knowledge, intellectual authority and social legitimacy. It argues that caste determines who can learn, teach, interpret and speak with authority, thereby reproducing structural inequalities. The article further considers caste census practices as political processes of counting and classification that can either challenge or reinforce existing hierarchies of knowledge and power.
