Abstract

This illustrated report examines the demolition of Jai Bhim Nagar, a settlement in Mumbai inhabited by nearly 700 families, many of whom contributed to the construction of the city’s urban infrastructure. It documents the displacement of residents and their efforts to mobilise, rebuild and reclaim their citizenship. The report raises broader questions about the rights of informal-settlement residents to the city, urban inequality, displacement and access to housing and citizenship.
