Abstract

This book review examines two recent works on Adivasi communities in India, focusing on tribal identity, livelihoods, resources, institutions and marginalisation. It situates the books within broader debates on land and forests, economy and culture, collective action and the continuing challenges faced by Adivasis despite constitutional protections and affirmative action. The review also reflects on the historical development of scholarship on Adivasi communities and the relationship between such scholarship and state-making.
