Abstract
The book review examines Madhu Ramnath’s Woodsmoke and Leafcups: Autobiographical Footnotes to the Anthropology of the Durwa in the context of the political and social realities of Bastar. It reflects on the region’s history of state intervention, counterinsurgency, resource extraction and the marginalisation of Adivasi communities. The review uses Bastar’s militarisation to question dominant representations of Adivasis as either subjects of development or participants in rebellion, highlighting the need to understand their lives, knowledge and relationship with forests from their own perspectives.
