Abstract

This book review examines Biswamoy Pati’s Tribals and Dalits in Orissa: Towards a Social History of Exclusion, c. 1800–1950 and its contribution to the social history of marginalised communities in colonial India. Budhaditya Das highlights Pati’s approach to writing history from below, using sources such as folklore, oral narratives and colonial archives to reconstruct the everyday experiences of communities excluded from dominant historical narratives. The review discusses the diverse histories of tribals, Dalits, peasants, low-caste healers and other marginalised groups in Odisha, emphasising their encounters with colonialism, caste, feudalism, religion and social exclusion. It underscores the significance of Pati’s work in recovering the life-worlds and agency of people at the margins of capital and empire.
