Abstract

The commentary examines statelessness as a major humanitarian and socio-legal issue, focusing on the persecution and exclusion of the Rohingya in Myanmar. It explores how citizenship and legal identity provide access to rights, security and social belonging, while exclusionary, state-controlled citizenship policies can produce disenfranchisement, poverty, forced migration and displacement. The article highlights the role of ethno-religious discrimination and majoritarian politics in sustaining the Rohingya’s prolonged condition of statelessness.
