Abstract
The article examines the growing prevalence of insecure and informal employment in India, arguing that skill development alone cannot address the country’s employment crisis. It highlights the limited creation of decent, secure jobs in growth-oriented sectors and the dominance of informal labour in other sectors, where workers often lack contracts, social security, health insurance, pensions and paid leave. The article also explores the intense competition for government jobs as a reflection of the wider demand for employment security and social mobility.
