Abstract

The report examines the widening economic inequality in India during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the sharp contrast between declining household incomes and rapidly increasing billionaire wealth. It shows that while 84% of households experienced income losses, the number of Indian billionaires increased from 102 to 142 in 2021. The report argues for greater wealth taxation and redistribution, noting that a 1% wealth tax on India’s richest billionaire families could substantially finance public healthcare programmes such as Ayushman Bharat.
