Abstract
The article critiques India’s reported GDP growth in the first quarter of 2021–22, arguing that the headline growth rate is misleading because it is substantially influenced by the low base created by the severe economic contraction during the COVID-19 lockdown. It examines the sectors contributing to the reported recovery and cautions against treating GDP growth alone as evidence of improved economic well-being, particularly when the pandemic’s social and economic hardships remain unresolved.
