Abstract

The article critiques the use of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the primary measure of India’s development and progress. It argues that GDP growth does not adequately reflect human well-being, social development, happiness or economic equality, highlighting the growing concentration of wealth and persistent disparities in access to basic services. Using Odisha as a case study, the article calls for broader measures of development that account for inequality, human development and quality of life.
