Abstract
This article examines the implementation of Social Impact Assessment (SIA) under India’s 2013 land acquisition law, focusing on its role in identifying social costs, affected communities, and mitigation measures. It highlights how state-level amendments, alternative land acquisition mechanisms, and weak institutional enforcement have diluted SIA safeguards. The authors argue that SIA is often treated as a procedural requirement rather than a meaningful tool for assessing project impacts and protecting affected communities.
