Abstract
Key Points High‐resolution regional model, reanalyses, and observation data sets reveal the critical pathways of abyssal watermasses in the Indian Ocean Approximately 12.5 Sv of abyssal waters enter the Indian Ocean through three pathways, of which about 10 Sv upwells along key hotspots Of the 10 Sv of upwelled abyssal waters, 8 Sv forms a southward return flow as deep waters at shallower depths
