Abstract

This article examines the continued practice of manual scavenging in India despite its legal abolition in 2013. It highlights the persistence of caste-based labour among Dalit communities and critiques the limited focus of the Swachh Bharat Mission on the health and dignity of sanitation workers. Drawing on field observations from the Valmiki community in Lucknow, it underscores the lived realities and challenges faced by manual scavengers.
