Abstract

This article posits the idea that while the idea of an anthrome may be relatively new, several cities of the global south with histories of settlement spanning several millennia are indeed examples of long standing anthromes. They have been shaped by and in turn influence human society creating a co-evolved, tightly coupled social ecological system. Using the case of the waterscape within the south Indian city of Bangalore, we demonstrate how nature and society have shaped, transformed, and influenced each other’s trajectories of development over several millennia. These coupled with today’s conditions of uncertainty caused by the Anthropocene, have created unique challenges of equity, justice, and sustainability—all of which need to be considered in the new age urban planning discourse.
