Abstract

The conditions of the economy and the school systems in the Global South challenge the promise of material wellbeing through education. Human Capital Theory (HCT), the dominant conceptual framework to explain the education-livelihoods relationship, is premised on the understanding that the labour market is capable of continually absorbing workers with ever-higher levels of education. However, economies in the Global South struggle to provide formal employment to educated youth and, at the same time, education systems are unable to provide quality education, particularly for students from marginalised communities. Alternate ways of conceptualising this relationship by postcolonial leaders, such as Gandhi, and through human rights and human capabilities approaches are discussed.
