Abstract

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the most relevant international policy instrument addressing protected areas, recognizes their significance for the conservation of biodiversity. Community conserved areas (CCAs) involve communities linked culturally and economically to the ecosystems in which they live. The chapter examines the biological effectiveness of community governance regimes with the objective of examining broad patterns, strong determinants, and expected trade-offs. It provides a summary of comparative biological effectiveness of community-managed landscapes relative to landscapes managed under strict protection regimes based on a comprehensive literature review. The chapter discusses Ostrom's (2007) socioecological system (SES) framework to analyze key socioeconomic, environmental, and institutional drivers of biological outcomes in CCAs. It provides a set of guiding principles for the integration of CCAs into national protected area systems. Community institutions are an important layer in a multilevel set of processes that underlie variable effectiveness of CCAs in conserving biodiversity targets.
