Abstract

This brief comment describes the role that the chapters in this volume have in correcting an implicit bias in the field of historical archaeology toward the Americas and on periods after 1500 CE. The intervention documented here is twofold. First, historical archaeology with a focus in South Asia and the Indian Ocean requires that researchers extend scales of analysis along temporal and spatial dimensions to decenter Atlantic World narratives in discussions of the modern world. Second, there are questions introduced in the fields of historical archaeology, especially along the dimensions of gender, indigeneity, and the marginalized that archaeologies of South Asia would benefit from engaging.
