Abstract

The present study was carried out to examine how dominant tree species richness and composition, green cover per capita, tree‑species traits, and ecosystem services vary, with the aim of understanding similarities in urban tree distribution across 10 Indian cities. A combined list of 226 dominant tree species was compiled for all 10 cities, which showed a maximum similarity of 56% in urban tree flora based on Sorenson’s index, and a minimum similarity of 19%. All the cities were characterised by the predominance of faster‑growing species. We emphasise that having a good balance of native and exotic species, along with a diversity of traits, would help make urban landscapes more resilient and better able to withstand unpredictable climatic conditions.
